Big Bubba was 2 1/2. He had continual ear infections, so we had gone that morning to have tubes put in to fix that problem. We came home with him, obviously cranky from the procedure and anesthesia, walked into the living room, turned on the TV and saw video like the image above. My heart sank.
Cranky kid crying and wanting attention, and seven heros dead in Florida... A miserable day I'll never forget.
did you see the NGC "Seconds Before Disaster" the other day? They were making the case that the shuttle hit a layer of crosswind that was as high as 193 kts which resulted in damage to the booster rocket, setting off a chain of events that led to the disaster... I had never heard that before, but it was pretty interesting. I have yet to see 193 kts wind at altitude. The fastest I have seen is 160 kts...
I was doing a western that day, the sky was beautiful, calm. I passed the prop truck and a couple of prop guys were cleaning guns as they sat on the tailgate of their 40 footer. They nonchalantly mentioned that the space shuttle had blown up. I thought that's a strange non-sequitur statement. Moments later other people said the same thing setting those words in stone, horrible empty words filled with loss.
