That's my best guess too Cary. What I don't understand is why he didn't do something we were all taught to do... an I.T.O., or instrument takeoff.
That's why these videos are sometimes confusing... we don't have all the facts. Maybe they were at extreme altitude and unable to do anything other than hover. If that was the case, when they lost contact with the ground they were no longer in control of their situation.
