I've been talking about this for the better part of a week. The program is one accident away from ending, and, if you agree with that, then this decision is one of the biggest they've ever made.
I can't believe they think a gash to the skin of the shuttle doesn't need to be repaired. I am afraid for the crew, and my gut tells me they will not make it back without damage. So sad they will have to suffer so NASA can "learn" something.
I know some of the "rocket scientists" and know that they, too, are doing the best they can in judging the risk. Yes, the program will die rightfully with another Challenger incident. No, there is no reason to believe that the techs are incompetent. If she burns again, it'll be a design flaw. I've always thought the design was faulty, but I ain't a rocket scientist. The rank-n-file do their damn best with pride and trepidation.

NASA will bring the Shuttle home with a hole in its belly.
I still think this is a neat photo of the Shuttle re-entry, but am I wrong to chuckle at the way it looks now that it's posted?
